PVC vs SPC Wall Panels: Which Should You Choose?

Wall panels have become the go-to alternative to tiles for bathrooms, kitchens and commercial interiors, but choosing between PVC and SPC can be confusing. Both are waterproof, both fit quickly, and both look sharp. The difference comes down to what the wall needs to withstand. This guide breaks down how the two compare so you can order the right panel first time.

PVC wall and ceiling panels

What are PVC wall panels?

PVC wall and ceiling panels are lightweight, 100% waterproof panels with a hollow or solid plastic core. Ranges like the Guardian Neptune come in hundreds of colours and patterns, from marble and stone effects to sparkle finishes, in widths from 250mm up to 1m mega panels. Because they are light, they are easy to handle, quick to cut, and typically at least 50% faster to fit than tiles, with no grout lines to maintain afterwards.

PVC panels are ideal for bathrooms, shower enclosures, wet rooms, ceilings and utility rooms. They eliminate the black mould and condensation problems that plague tiled and painted walls in humid spaces.

What are SPC wall panels?

SPC wall panels take the same waterproof principle and add a rigid stone plastic composite core. The Guardian Odyssey range uses 5mm SPC panels that are harder, denser and far more resistant to impact and scratching than standard PVC. They come in 600mm and 1m widths across concrete and carrara finishes.

That extra toughness is the whole point. SPC panels are rated for heavy commercial use, which makes them the right choice for busy hallways, commercial kitchens, hotels, rental properties and any wall that takes regular knocks.

PVC vs SPC: the key differences

  • Durability: SPC wins. The stone polymer core shrugs off impacts that would mark a standard PVC panel.
  • Weight and handling: PVC wins. Lighter panels are easier to transport, lift and fit, especially on ceilings.
  • Design choice: PVC wins on sheer range, with far more colours and patterns available. SPC offers a tighter, contemporary palette of concrete and carrara designs.
  • Waterproofing: a draw. Both are 100% waterproof and suitable for wet rooms.
  • Price: PVC panels generally cost less per panel, so for a straightforward bathroom refresh they are the budget-friendly option.

Which should you choose?

For a domestic bathroom, shower or ceiling, standard PVC panels do everything you need at the lower price. For high-traffic areas, commercial projects or anywhere durability is the priority, step up to SPC. And if you want a premium decorative finish for a bathroom wet wall, it is also worth comparing the Perform Wall Panels collections, which offer 48 designs with a unique click-fit system.
