Wall Panels vs Tiles: Cost, Fitting Time and Maintenance Compared

Tiles have been the default choice for bathroom and kitchen walls for decades, but wall panels now outsell them on many renovation projects, and for good reason. If you are deciding between the two, here is an honest comparison across the things that actually matter: cost, fitting time, waterproofing and upkeep.

Upfront cost

Panel for panel versus tile for tile, quality wall panels are usually the cheaper way to cover a wall. A single 1m-wide mega panel covers the same area as dozens of tiles, with no adhesive bags, grout, spacers, or specialist cutting tools on the shopping list. Entry-level PVC wall and ceiling panels start well below the cost of tiling the same area, while premium options like Perform Wall Panels compete with mid-range and designer tiles on looks at a lower installed cost.

Fitting time

This is where panels pull clearly ahead. Wall panels are typically at least 50% faster to fit than tiles. There is no tile-by-tile setting out, no waiting for adhesive to cure before grouting, and no grouting at all. Panels cut with standard tools and cover large areas in single pieces, so a bathroom that takes days to tile can be panelled in a fraction of the time. Whether the work is being done by your installer or as a confident DIY project, the labour saving is significant.

wall panels vs tiles, what should you choose?

Waterproofing

Tiles themselves are waterproof, but grout is not, and grout lines are where tiled bathrooms fail: water ingress, staining and black mould. Wall panels form a continuous waterproof surface with sealed joints and no grout anywhere. For showers and wet rooms, this is the single biggest practical advantage. For harder-working spaces, SPC wall panels add a rigid stone composite core that is rated for heavy commercial use while staying 100% waterproof.

Maintenance

A tiled wall needs grout cleaned, whitened and eventually raked out and replaced. A panelled wall needs a wipe with a damp cloth. Over a ten-year life, the difference in both effort and cost is substantial. Panels will not chip like ceramic either, and there are no grout lines to harbour mould in commercial kitchens, which is why hygienic wall cladding is the standard specification in food preparation environments.

Looks and design choice

Modern panels have closed the style gap. Marble, stone, concrete and sparkle finishes are all available, grout-effect ranges recreate the look of tiling without the grout, and slatted acoustic wall panels bring a wood-effect feature-wall option that tiles simply cannot match. Tiles still offer more choice in very small formats and hand-made finishes, so for intricate splashback patterns they keep an edge.

The verdict

If you want the lowest installed cost, the fastest fit and the least maintenance, wall panels win. If you want a hand-made mosaic feature, tiles still have their place. For most bathrooms, kitchens and commercial interiors, panels are the practical choice, and you can compare every option in our full wall panels range.
